Deerstalkers Club SSAA (Vic)

The SSAA Deerstalkers Club was established in 1970 with the aim of providing a club specifically for members interested in the art of stalking. The club's motto is "Aequo Venato" which translates literally to "by means of a fair hunt".

The club has a Code of Ethics and runs a hunter training course each year in an effort to develop proficient, responsible and humane deer hunters. Upon completion of the course, which is held one night a month over a number of months, each trainee is awarded a certificate as proof they have completed the course.

A group of club members own a hunting lodge situated in prime sambar hunting country at Woods Point and other financial members can join the lodge membership. Lodge members have unlimited access to the lodge during the hunting season and outside of this time, it can be booked by lodge members for their own use.

The club is active in defending deer hunting opportunities and hunting rights for all hunters, whether club members or not. It was active in gaining deer hunting access to Eildon State Park, Wonnangatta National Park and the Alpine National Park. When the government releases a regulatory impact statement that may have an impact on deer hunting rights, the club will lodge a submission defending our interests. The club has been active on issues such as Flora and Fauna guarantee, spotlighting and game regulations.

Meetings are held at the Springvale Rifle Range, 710 Dandenong Road Springvale Melbourne, on the 3rd Wednesday of each month (no meeting in January) and commence at 8:00pm. These meetings cover the most basic and practical subjects such as deer hunting, rifles, firearms proficiency, navigation, gear, camping and survival in general, meat preparation and trophy care. They are also an opportunity to meet other hunters, swap tales and strike up new friendships.

The club also has annual awards for members, including Stag of the Year, a photo competition and Clubman of the Year. Before the main hunting season the Club holds an annual pre-season shoot at the Little River range. The Club also conducts two to three camps each year ranging from Eildon State Park to Horse Yard Flat on the Moroka River.

The Deerstalkers Club was a founding member of the Australian Deerstalkers Federation (ADF). The ADF maintains a trophy register, a prerequisite of listing is a statutory declaration that the trophy was taken in an ethical manner, by fair chase. Listed trophies are endorsed with the ADF medallion which may be mounted on the shield.

Membership: $25.00 for the first year. Each subsequent year is (currently) $20.00.
